Cannabis infused coffees are gaining popularity to treat the symptoms of depression and anxiety.
The traditional treatments for depression include medications, which are effective, but they are also expensive and can have drastic side effects. As a result, more people are turning to natural alternatives.
Depression: More Prevalent Than You Thought
Depression is one of the most prevalent mental diseases in the world. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), 16.2 million adults in the United States (US) aged 18 or older had at least one major depressive episode in 2016.
Canada reported similar statistics in the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) on mental health: 5.4% of the Canadian population aged 15 years experienced symptoms of a mood disorder in the last 12 months.
Hemp-Derived CBD Does Not Intoxicate
Among the different kinds of cannabis-infused coffees, hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) coffee is considered the safest. This is because it contains virtually no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which causes the high from cannabis consumption.
Other CBD products such as tea and hot chocolate are also available to consumers in the market. Even beverage giants like Coca-Cola are considering adding CBD to their beverages.
CBD May Soon Be Legal in the US
Even though some states in the US have legalized recreational marijuana, it remains illegal under federal law. Since CBD does not cause any intoxication and is said to have therapeutic benefits, it may become legal in the US soon.
A few months ago, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell proposed a bill to remove hemp and its derivatives from the list of controlled substances in the US. The bill is likely to be approved soon.
As a result, the CBD market is expected to grow. The Hemp Business Journal estimated it would hit $2.1 billion in consumer sales by 2020. They expect $450 million of these sales to come from hemp-derived CBD.
